Privacy Policy

This policy explains what personal information PlatePal collects, why we collect it, and the choices you have. We handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

1. Who we are

PlatePal is an educational nutrition and meal-planning service for adults, built around the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating. In this policy, “PlatePal”, “we”, “us” and “our” mean the PlatePal service and the people who run it.

We are the organisation responsible for the personal information described here. Our contact details are at the end of this page.

2. What we collect

We only collect what we need to build your plan and run your account:

  • •Account details: your name, email address and password. If you sign in with Google, we receive your name and email from Google.
  • •Profile details: your age or date of birth, sex, height, weight, activity level, goals, allergies, dietary preferences and shopping habits.
  • •Meal and lifestyle logs: the foods you log, portions, dates and meal types, plus check-ins such as alcohol, smoking and organic choices.
  • •Photos and descriptions you submit when logging a meal or asking for advice.
  • •Enquiry details: if you use our Get started form, your name, email, phone number and location.
  • •Billing details: handled by our payment provider. We receive confirmation of your subscription, the plan, amounts and status. We never store your full card number.
  • •Technical data: device type, browser, approximate location derived from your IP address, pages viewed and error logs.

3. Health and sensitive information

Information about your body, allergies, diet, alcohol use and smoking is sensitive information under the Privacy Act. We collect it only because you choose to give it to us so we can personalise your guidance, and we ask for your consent by having you submit that information in your profile.

You can use PlatePal without filling in every field. The less you share, the more general your guidance will be.

4. How we use your information

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your health information for advertising.

  • •To create your account and personalise meal suggestions, targets and advice.
  • •To work out your Longevity Booster score, medals and weekly trends.
  • •To warn you about foods that conflict with the allergies and diets in your profile.
  • •To take payment and manage your subscription.
  • •To respond to your enquiries and provide support.
  • •To keep the service secure, diagnose faults and improve features.
  • •To send you service messages, and — only if you opt in — occasional product updates you can unsubscribe from at any time.

5. Photos and food descriptions

When you log a meal, the description you type or the photo you upload is used to identify the food and estimate your serve. Photos are stored so you can review your own history. We do not publish your photos, use them in marketing, or show them to other members.

6. Automated and AI processing

Some features — recognising a meal from a photo or a short description, and drafting advice in plain language — use automated processing. Your inputs are sent to our AI service providers only to produce that result for you.

We review and constrain how these features are used so that automated output supports, but never replaces, professional advice. You can always ignore or correct what the app suggests.

7. Payments

Card payments are processed by Stripe. Your card details are entered on Stripe's secure checkout and are never stored on our servers. We keep a record of your plan, subscription status and the transaction identifiers Stripe returns so we can support you and meet our accounting obligations.

8. Who we share information with

We share personal information only with providers that help us run PlatePal, and only as far as they need it:

  • •Our hosting, database and file-storage providers, which hold your account and log data on our behalf.
  • •Stripe, for payment processing and subscription management.
  • •Our AI service providers, for meal recognition and advice drafting.
  • •Our email provider, for account and service messages.
  • •Professional advisers, regulators or law enforcement, where the law requires it or where we need to establish or defend a legal claim.

9. How we protect your information

Data is encrypted in transit, access to member records is restricted to the individual account, and administrative access is limited to the small team who need it. We review access regularly.

No online service can guarantee absolute security. If a data breach is likely to cause you serious harm, we will notify you and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner as required by the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.

10. Overseas storage

Some of our service providers store data outside Australia, including in the United States and the European Union. Where information is sent overseas we take reasonable steps to ensure it is handled consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.

11. Cookies and analytics

We use cookies and similar storage to keep you signed in and remember your preferences. We may use privacy-respecting analytics to understand which pages are useful. You can block cookies in your browser, though parts of the app — such as staying signed in — will stop working.

12. Access, correction and deletion

You can view and edit your profile and logs inside the app at any time. You can also ask us to:

  • •give you a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
  • •correct information that is inaccurate or out of date;
  • •delete your account and the personal information attached to it.

We will respond within 30 days. Deleting your account removes your profile, logs and photos, except records we must keep for tax, fraud-prevention or legal reasons.

13. Complaints

If you think we have handled your information poorly, contact us first — most issues are resolved quickly. If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au or on 1300 363 992.

14. Children

PlatePal is designed for adults. You must be 18 or older to create an account, and we do not knowingly collect information from children.

15. Changes to this policy

When we change how we handle personal information we will update this page and its date, and tell you by email if the change is significant.
